Dirtbags Win it in the Ninth

Dirtbags Win it Again Late WICHITA, KS-- No. 17-ranked Long Beach State (12-5) won for the fifth time in its last at-bat, as Brandon Godfrey delievered a one-out RBI double to give the Dirtbags a 2-1 victory at No. 12-ranked Wichita State (14-5) on Friday evening. The Dirtbags took a 2-1 lead in the ninth, as Godfrey made up for two errors earlier in the contest by lacing an 0-1 pitch over the head of centerfielder Blake Hurlbutt to score Robert Perry from first. Perry had reached on an error by third baseman Conor Gillaspie. Godfrey was facing reliever Noah Booth, whose second pitch of the game led to the winning run. Travis Banwart (4-2), who retired 10 in a row at one point and did not allow another hit after the third, gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits, striking out seven in the contest for the loss. Banwart left in a 1-1 tie with Perry on at first. WSU mounted a rally in the ninth, as Ryan Jones worked a one-out walk off of winner Andrew Liebel (3-1), and then Tyler Weber worked a walk off of closer Bryan Shaw. A fielder's choice put runners on the corners, before Shaw picked up his fifth save following a strikeout of Danny Jackson. LBSU starter Vance Worley had a strong start, using just 84 pitches through seven and two thirds innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits. During the early going, he threw just 34 pitches through three, and used just eight pitches in the fourth and fifth innings. Worley gave it over to the bullpen with two outs and a runner on in the eighth, as Liebel struck out Matt Brown to send it to the ninth. Danny Espinosa's third home run of the year, a solo shot with one out in the second, gave LBSU an early 1-0 lead. Wichita State tied it up in the fifth off of two LBSU errors, both by first baseman Brandon Godfrey, the first to allow Gillaspie to reach base, before another error off a bunt attempt, allowed Gillaspie to score from first to make it 1-1. The series continues on Saturday at noon Pacific and Sunday at 10 a.m. Pacific. |
