Luck Not in the Cards for the Dirtbags WICHITA, KS-- No. 17-ranked Long Beach State (12-6) twice rallied from four-run deficits only to have the No. 12-ranked Wichita State (15-5) bullpen of Anthony Capra and Noah Kroll retire the final seven batters of the game to even the series with the Dirtbags following an 8-7 victory. A two-run home run by Danny Jackson proved to be the difference in the contest, as it made it 8-4 in the sixth. In the seventh, a pinch-hit double by Steve Tinoco followed by a two-run single by Brian Capon cut the lead to 8-7. LBSU then did not reach base for the rest of the contest. The Dirtbags had scored two runs in the fifth to close with within 6-4, and came a few feet short of taking the lead, as a Jason Corder flyball to left was caught at the wall in the fifth. Winner Aaron Shafer (3-2) pitched into the sixth, going five and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits. He also struck out seven, giving it over to Capra, who gave up three unearned runs over two and one-third innings of work. Krol pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save. Omar Arif (1-3) lasted just the first three innings for Long Beach State, giving up four runs in the third. Arif twice gave up leads, leaving with WSU leading 5-2 in the fourth. David Roberts gave up a single run the fourth. Capon scored the go-ahead run the third to make it 2-1, after reaching base on an error by shortstop Derek Schermerhorn. Capon had tagged out Bret Bascue at the plate the previous half inning, after Bascue tried to hurdle over Capon on a single to left. Kyle Morgan's throw was right on though from left and Capon applied the tag for the final out of the inning. Second baseman Matt Cline got another runner at the plate in the fifth, as Capon's swipe tag kept the game at 6-4 after the infield played in. Robert Perry quickly put The Beach on the board in the first as he took Shafer's first pitch to rightfield for his first home run of the year and an early 1-0 lead. The finale of the series will be Sunday at noon Pacific. |
