Dirtbags Pound ASU in 16-9 Slugfest TEMPE, AZ-- No. 19-ranked Long Beach State (10-5) pounded out 23 hits on Sunday and 39 hits over the the final two wins, to take the three-game series with No. 11-ranked Arizona State (13-7) 16-9. Brandon Godfrey and Danny Espinosa became the first set of teammates to each have five hit games, while Taylor Krick added a four-hit afternoon. Allen Woods reached base safely five times, walking three times, and driving in two more with two singles in six plate appearances. The Beach twice scored five runs in an inning, first in the sixth to take the lead and then in the ninth to put the contest out of reach. The Beach scored five runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-6 lead and bounce back into the lead. An error by third baseman Matt Hall led to three unearned runs as The Beach batted around and took the lead on a Tinoco RBI double, at 7-6, and extended it further on a sacrifice fly followed by an RBI double by Espinosa to make it 9-6. LBSU would tie the game in the fifth after Godfrey's two-run single in the fourth cut the lead to 4-2. A two-run double by Krick tied it, before ASU re-took the lead with two runs off of reliever and winner Adam Wilk in the bottom of the fifth. Wilk (1-0) went a career-high 3.2 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) out of the bullpen, after Andre Lamontagne gave up the first three runs. Matt Trink (0-1),who gave up seven runs in relief, took the loss. Tim Smith hit a three-run home run in the first inning to give ASU an early 3-0 lead off of Lamontange, in his first weekend start of his career. An Ike Davis leadoff homer in the third then gave the Sun Devils a 4-0 advantage early off of Wilk. The Dirtbags remain on the road next week, traveling to UCLA on Tuesday, before going to Wichita State next weekend. |
