Beach Drops Fourth In A Row

IRVINE, CA-- In a match-up of the top two teams in the Big West Conference,
#41-ranked UC Irvine came away with a 4-3 win over #35 Long Beach State
on Thursday at the Anteater Tennis Stadium. UCI improved to 11-2 overall
with the win and 5-0 against Big West foes. The 49ers fell to 5-5 on the
year and 3-1 in the Big West.
UCI won the doubles point by winning at the #1 and #3 spots. At one doubles,
Becky Bernhard and Claire Fermin won 9-7 over Stephanie Bengson and Katy
Williams. At three doubles, Ali Borowicz and Jayme Hu won 8-5 over Sandra
Rocha and Emmanuelle Tabatruong. The 49er win came at #2 doubles as Hannah
Grady and Jessica Weeks defeated Jessica Broadfoot and Heidi Kaloi 8-4.
In singles action the match hinged on the result from #6 singles. The
49ers had tied the match at 3-3 after winning three singles matches. At
six singles, UCI’s Borowicz held on to defeat Rocha 6-3, 2-6, 6-4
to clinch the win. The 49er wins came at #2 singles as Williams won 6-2,
6-2 over Inga Agababian, at #3 singles where Bengson won 6-3, 6-3 over
Fermin and at #4 singles where Weeks won 6-4, 6-3 over Kaloi. At #1 singles,
it was a match-up between two nationally-ranked players. #81 Becky Bernhard
prevailed over #52-ranked Hannah Grady 6-2, 6-4.
The 49ers will be at home on Saturday, March 3, when they host Cal Poly
at 11 am at the 49er Campus Courts.
