to Finish Ninth
LA JOLLA, CA-- Long Beach State (3-1) won its third-straight game of the Triton Classic, finishing ninth following a 9-5 victory over CS Northridge. Kim Hayes had 22 saves on the day, as the 49ers also came back to defeat Princeton 8-7 earlier in the day. In the night cap, LBSU slowly built theire lead, pushing across a 3-2 lead after two periods, before exploding for four goals in the third quarter to lead 7-4 after 24 minutes. Christina Wensman had three goals against the Matadors. Earlier, the 49ers posted their second-straight come from behind victory at the Triton Classic, as Cecilia Canetti's third goal of the game gave the 49ers with lead with 5:54 left and led the 49ers to a 8-7 victory over Princeton. Kim Hayes had a career-best 12 saves for the 49ers. "We came into the tournament with a lot of first game jitters, but came out as a single team," said first year Head Coach Catharine von Schwarz. "A couple of our goals were to improve with every game and every quarter and we did that." Marina Canetti tied the game with 7:38 left in the fourth period at 6-6 after the Tigers led 4-2 at the half and 6-5 after three periods. Cecilia then followed with a gola to make it 7-6 and LBSU built an 8-6 lead on the second of two goals by Marina, at 4:38. The 49ers are at Hawaii on February 17 at 2 p.m. |
