49ers Ranked No. 27 Nationally Grady And Weeks Ranked No. 48 In Doubles
January 9, 2007 LONG BEACH, CA-- The Long Beach State women's tennis team is ranked No. 27 in the country in the latest FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings administered by the ITA. The 49ers, who finished the 2006 season at 22-5 and ranked No. 26 nationally, have won three consecutive Big West Conference Championships, and four over the past five years. Last season the 49ers began the spring season ranked No. 57 in the country before concluding the campaign at No. 26.
This years schedule features 12 matches against teams which are nationally-ranked. In order of ranking, the 49ers will tangle this season with USC (3), Virginia Commonwealth (13), Pepperdine (14), Fresno State (21), Florida International (35), Iowa (36), San Diego State (39), Penn (41), UNLV (48), UC Irvine (55), Loyola Marymount (68) and Big West foe UC Santa Barbara (73).
Individually, the sophomore doubles team of Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks are ranked No. 48. The duo began the fall season ranked No. 23 nationally and concluded the fall ranked No. 6 in the West Region. The pair compiled a 1-2 mark in the fall, with all three matches coming at the Riviera All-American Championships. All three opponents were nationally-ranked at the time, with the victory coming over the No. 37ranked duo of Schofield and Vuckovic of South Carolina.
The 49ers begin their season on January 24 when they play at No. 3 USC at 1:30 pm. The home opener will be on January 26 when they host the University of San Francisco at 2 pm at the 49er Campus Courts.
