49ers Fall At USC
49ers Next In Action On Friday Vs. USF
January 24, 2007
LOS ANGELES, CA-- The No. 27-ranked Long Beach State women’s tennis
team kicked off its 2007 spring season with a 7-0 loss at No. 3-ranked
USC at Marks Stadium on the USC campus.
“This was a tough match, opening with the number three team in the
country,” said 49er Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. “We had
a lot of cobwebs, having not played a competitive match since October,
and it showed. But, having said that, I think we learned from this match
and we’ll improve on our next match.”
USC got off to a strong start as they won all three doubles matches. At
No. 1 doubles, the USC duo of Julie Smekodub and Anca Anastasiu defeated
the 49ers Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks 8-3. Grady and Weeks enter the
spring ranked No. 48 in the nation. At No. 2 doubles, No. 15-ranked Amanda
Fink and Judy DeVera defeated Stephanie Bengson and Sandra Rocha 8-3 and
at the No. 3 spot Dianne Matias and Sarah Fansler (ranked No. 23) defeated
Katy Williams and Rachael Porsz, 8-1.
Singles action saw the Trojans sweep all six matches in straight sets.
At No. 1 singles, Fansler, who is ranked ninth nationally, defeated Grady
6-2, 6-3. The best match of the day may have been at the No. 5 spot as
junior Emmanuelle Tabatruong hung tough with No. 95-ranked Judy DeVera
before falling 7-6 (3), 6-1. Fink recorded a 6-1, 6-4 win over Williams
at the number two spot and No. 46-ranked Matias won 6-1, 6-2 over Bengson
at three singles.
The 49ers will next be in action on Friday, January 26 when they host
the University of San Francisco at 2 pm at the 49er Campus Courts.
