49ers Earn A Split On Saturday
LONG BEACH, CA-- Jeff Greenwood scored a career-high five goals in leading Long Beach State to a 15-10 win over Pomona-Pitzer (4-9) on Saturday at the Campus Pool. The 15 goals was a season-high for the 49ers. The win earned Long Beach a split on the day as earlier in the afternoon fourth-ranked UC San Diego (14-2) scored the final three goals of the game and escaped with a 9-8 win over the 49ers (2-5). The Tritons got five goals from Jesse Casellini while the 49ers were led by Nick Korsgaden’s three goals. In the nightcap, All-American Jay Gerardi added three goals and Kevin Mundia had a career-best two goals, to compliment Greenwood’s five, as the 49ers prevailed. Leading 6-2 early in the second quarter, the Sagehens rallied with three consecutive goals to pull to within 6-5 at the 5:52 mark of the third quarter. From there on it was all 49ers. Long beach scored five consecutive goals and seven of eight to take a commanding 13-6 lead early in the fourth quarter. Korsgaden began the five-goal rally with a goal at 5:28. Gerardi followed at 3:46 and then Greenwood tallied back-to-back goals at 1:22 and 0:29. The final goal of the quarter came at the buzzer as Greg Henneman tallied for the 49ers. In goal, Steve MacKenzie recorded 10 saves. In the early game, Gerardi’s goal with 4:42 left in the contest gave Long Beach State an 8-6 lead. UCSD fought right back as Casellini scored his fifth goal of the day at the 3:59 mark to pull UCSD to within 8-7. Ty Lackey tied the game at 8-8 with 1:22 left scoring on a six-on-five advantage. After a 49er turnover at their end of the pool, Lackey found the back of the net again at 1:00 to give the Tritons the lead. For the 49ers, Jeff Greenwood and Greg Henneman both tallied two goals while 49er goalie Steve MacKenzie recorded 10 goalie saves. Long Beach jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one quarter as Greenwood tallied both of his goals (4:24, 3:27) in that period. UCSD rebounded with a 3-0 second quarter to take a 4-3 halftime lead. Casellini scored at 5:25 and 1:33 while Benjamin Miller scored at 0:38 for UCSD. In the third quarter, with the 49ers trailing 5-4, Henneman scored at 2:28 and 0:20, both on man advantage opportunites for Long Beach. The 49ers led 6-5 heading into the fourth quarter. Korsgaden’s breakaway goal at 7:21 gave LBSU a 7-5 lead before Casellini scored his fourth goal at 6:01. Gerardi’s goal at 4:42 was the final goal of the day for the 49ers. The 49ers will next be in action on Saturday, October 7 when they host the Long Beach Mini Tournament at the 49er Campus Pool. |
