49ers Home For Two On Saturday Beach Falls To No. 1 USC, 12-7

The Record: Long Beach State is 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the MPSF after dropping a 12-7 decision at home to No. 1 USC last Saturday. This weekend the 49ers will play two matches on Saturday. At 3 pm the 49ers host No. 5-ranked UC San Diego (12-2) and at 6 pm Pomona-Pitzer (4-7) will be the opponent.
The Coach: Gavin Arroyo (California ‘94) is 1-4 (.200) in his first year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Arroyo spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Cal and was an eight-year member of the U.S. National Team (1993-2000), competing in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games.
The Series: The 49ers lead in their series with UC San Diego by a 39-12 count. The 49ers were 0-3 against the Tritons last year and have lost the last seven meetings. The 49ers lead their series with Pomona-Pitzer, 1-0. The 49ers won 13-6 last year at the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest Tournament.
Tight One Vs. USC: The 49ers dropped a 12-7 decision to No. 1-ranked USC on Saturday at the Campus Pool. The 49ers led 5-4 late in the second quarter before the Trojans scored two late goals to take a 6-5 halftime lead. In the second half USC scored four consecutive goals to put the game out of reach. Kevin Bradley and Nick Korsgaden both had two goals for the 49ers while goalie Steve MacKenzie had nine saves.
Close Games: The 49ers three losses at the NorCal Tournament came by a total of just five goals. The 49ers struggled in the fourth quarter, being out-scored 12-5 in the four games.
UCSD Facts: The Tritons are 12-2 overall and are ranked No. 5 in the country. Last weekend they defeated No. 6 Loyola Marymount at home, 8-7. UCSD will play at UC Santa Barbara on Friday before taking on the 49ers on Saturday. The Tritons have four players who have scored 20 or more goals this season. Ty Lackey leads the way with 31 goals while A.J. Kotanjian has 25.
Pomona-Pitzer Facts: The Sagehens are 4-7 on the season, but have won three in a row. Last weekend they defeated Mt. SAC (20-8), Golden West (10-9) and Cal Baptist (11-10) at the Cal Baptist Mini Tournament. They play at USC on Saturday at 1 pm before heading down to Long Beach.
Jay Gerardi: Senior All-American Jay Gerardi (Long Beach) scored one goal against USC and now stands at 109 in his 49er career, good for 19th place. In the opening weekend at the Norcal Tournament, Gerardi tallied nine goals in the four games. He scored in every game this season, the only 49er to do so. Gerardi had a career-high tying four goals against Navy.
Nick Korsgaden: Junior Nick Korsgaden (Stockton) had two goals in Saturday's USC contest, giving him five on the year. Korsgaden also had two goals against UC Santa Cruz at the NorCal Tournament. The two goals tie his career-high which he set three times in the 2004 campaign (MIT, Chapman, Brown).
Kevin Bradley: Senior Kevin Bradley (Long Beach) has recorded two goals in three different games this season. Saturday against USC he found the back of the net twice and he also scored twice against Navy and Santa Clara at the NorCal Tournament. Bradley had six goals on the season, third-best on the squad.
Jeff Greenwood: Redshirt freshman Jeff Greenwood (Whittier) is second on the team with seven goals this year. He had a career-high four goals in the opening game of the NorCal tournament against Pacific and had one this past weekend vs. USC.
Steve MacKenzie: Junior Steve MacKenzie (Walnut Creek) has started in goal four times this season and is averaging 9.75 saves per game. He had nine saves on Saturday against USC and recorded a career-best 13 saves against Navy.
MPSF Statistics: Goalie Steve MacKenzie ranks third in the MPSF in saves per game at 9.75 while Jay Gerardi is tied for eighth in goals per game at 2.00 and Jeff Greenwood is 21st at 1.40 goals per contest.
