49ers Host USC On Saturday Beach Goes 1-3 At NorCal Tournament

The Record: Long Beach State went 1-3 at the NorCal Tournament last weekend at Stanford, defeating Santa Clara (12-10) in its final game. This weekend the 49ers kick off MPSF action at home as they host USC (6-0) at 12 pm at the Campus Pool. The Trojans won the NorCal Tournament, defeating California 10-7 in the championship game. They should be ranked No. 1 in the nation when the new poll is released later this week.
The Coach: Gavin Arroyo (California ‘94) is 1-3 (.250) in his first year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Arroyo spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Cal and was an eight-year member of the U.S. National Team (1993-2000), competing in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games.
The Series: The 49ers trail in their series with USC by a 51-22 margin. USC defeated the 49ers three times last season and have won the past 10 meetings between the two. The last 49er win came in the 2000 season, an 11-9 triumph at home.
NorCal Tournament: The 49ers lost three close games and then ended the tournament with a 12-10 win over Santa Clara. The three losses were by a combined five goals. In its opener, the 49ers fell to Pacific 14-12. The Tigers out-scored the 49ers 3-1 in the fourth quarter. Next, the 49ers fell to Navy 9-8 after holding a 7-5 halftime lead. On Sunday UC Santa Cruz upset the 49ers 8-6. In the four contests senior Jay Gerardi led the way with nine goals, including four against Navy. Jeff Greenwood added six (four vs. Pacific) and Justin Koeppen and Clint Wilson both had five goals. In goal, Steve MacKenzie recorded 30 saves in three games while Tyler Anderson had six saves in his lone appearance vs. UC Santa Cruz.
Close Games: The 49ers three losses last weekend came by a total of just five goals. The 49ers struggled in the fourth quarter, being out-scored 12-5 in the four games.
USC Facts: The Trojans are 6-0 on the year and just won the NorCal Tournament with a 10-7 win over California. Leading the way is Juan Delgadillo, who has 12 goals for the Trojans. Delgadillo was named the MPSF Player of the Week this week and had three goals in the win over Cal. Thomas Hale is second on the team with 11 goals. USC is averaging 12.3 goals per game and are out-scoring opponents 21-5 in the first quarter. Goalie Adam Shilling has allowed 18 goals in 18 quarters thus far.
Six New Starters: The 49ers sported six new starters last weekend at the NorCal. The lone returning starter from 2005 is senior Jay Gerardi (two-year starter, 88 career games at LBSU). The newcomers who cracked the starting lineup were Travis Buchanan (junior, 14 career games at LBSU), Jeff Greenwood (redshirt freshman), Greg Henneman (JC transfer), Justin Koeppen (redshirt freshman), Nick Korsgaden (junior, 15 career games at LBSU) and Clint Wilson (junior, 34 career games at LBSU). In goal, junior Steve MacKenzie (JC transfer) started three of the four games last weekend.
Jay Gerardi: Senior All-American Jay Gerardi (Long Beach) scored nine goals in the four games this past weekend at the NorCal Tournament. He scored in each game, including four goals against Navy. Gerardi, who was second on the team last season with 61 goals, jumped to No. 19 on the 49er career chart with 108 goals.
Jeff Greenwood: Redshirt freshman Jeff Greenwood (Whittier) started all four games and tallied six goals at the NorCal Tournament. He had a career-high four goals in the opening game of the tournament against Pacific.
Justin Koeppen: Redshirt freshman Justin Koeppen (Murietta) tallied five goals in the four NorCal games in his first collegiate action. Koeppen scored in every game, including two goals in the win over Santa Clara.
Steve MacKenzie: Junior Steve MacKenzie (Walnut Creek) started three of the four games in goal at the NorCal Tournament. He finished with 30 saves in 12 quarters and allowed 33 goals. MacKenzie recorded a career-high 13 saves in the game against Navy.
Reid Tomassi: Tomassi will redshirt the 2006 season due to injury. The senior out of Winter Park, FL scored 34 goals last season and currently ranks No. 11 all-time at LBSU with 126 career goals.
