STANFORD, CA-- Long Beach State jumped to a 5-1 halftime lead and held
on from there to defeat Santa Clara 12-10 on Sunday at the NorCal Tournament.
With the win the 49ers improve to 1-3 on the season and gave first year
Head Coach Gavin Arroyo his first collegiate victory.
The 49ers had eight players score against the Broncos with four players
scoring twice. Kevin Bradley, Jay Gerardi, Justin Koeppen and Jeff Greenwood
all tallied two goals for the victorious 49ers. Long Beach led 5-1 at
the half and then put up six goals in the third quarter to take an 11-5
lead. The Broncos were able to make the score repectable by tallying five
goals in the fourth quarter. In goal for the 49ers junior Steve MacKenzie
had nine goalie saves.
In its morning contest, the 49ers lost 8-6 to UC Santa Cruz. Nick Korsgaden
led the way with two goals while Gerardi, Koeppen, Clint Wilson and Greg
Henneman all tallied one goal. Tyler Anderson had six goalie saves in
his first appearance of the year.
In the four games at the NorCal Tournament, Gerardi tallied a team-best
nine goals, while Greenwood added six and Koeppen and Clint Wilson five
apiece. The three losses during the tournament by the 49ers came by a
grand total of just five goals.
The 49ers will next be in action on Saturday, September 23 when they host
USC at 12 pm at the 49er Campus Pool.
