STANFORD, CA-- It was a tough first day for the Long Beach State men's
water polo team at the NorCal Tournament at Stanford. In the opener, the
49ers fell to Pacific 14-12 as the Tigers out-scored the 49ers 3-1 in
the final quarter. In its afternoon contest, the 49ers held a 7-5 halftime
lead, but ended up falling to Navy 9-8. The 49ers are 0-2 on the season
and will continue play on Sunday at the NorCal when they take on UC Santa
Cruz at 8 am.
In the opener, University of the Pacific (7-2) out-scored Long Beach State
three-to-one in the fourth quarter to come away with a 14-12 win. Redshirt
freshman Jeff Greenwood led the 49ers (0-1) with four goals. Trailing
9-6 at the half, the 49ers responded with five third quarter goals to
tie the contest at 11-11. The ninth-ranked Tigers rebounded in the fourth
quarter to earn the win. Jay Gerardi and Clint Wilson both had two goals
for Long Beach, while Travis Buchanan, Justin Koeppen, Nick Korsgaden
and Jeff Henneman all tallied one. Matt Turnbull led the Tigers with five
goals and Duje Kaurioto added four. The victory was the fifth in a row
for the Tigers.
In the afternoon, the 49ers led 7-5 at the half, but Navy (7-3) out-scored
the 49ers 4-1 in the second half. Gerardi scored four goals and Kevin
Bradley had two for the 49ers. In goal, Steve MacKenzie recorded 13 goalie
saves. For Navy, Bram Arnold tallied three goals and Mike Mulvey two.
Mulvey's goal at 6:42 in the final quarter proved to be the game-winner
for the Middies.
