49ers Beat Matadors In Semifinals Beach To Face UC Irvine In Championship
April 29, 2006 INDIAN WELLS, CA-- The No. 27-ranked Long Beach State women's tennis team picked up another win at the 2006 Big West Conference Tennis Championships at Indian Wells Tennis Gardens with a hard-fought 4-1 victory over Cal State Northridge (16-7) in Saturday's semifinal action. The 49ers (20-4) have won eight consecutive Big West Tournament matches over the past three years and advance to their sixth consecutive appearance in the championship match. The 49ers won Big West titles in 2002, 2004 and 2005.
Long Beach won the doubles point by winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. At No. 1 doubles, Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks won 8-6 over Kanykey Koichumanova and Canna Furuta. At three doubles, Stephanie Bengson and Rachael Porsz won 8-5 over Ana Matijasevic and Olga Yepremian. CS Northridge won at No. 2 doubles as Kasia Krasinska and YuYu Myinttun won 8-3 over Sandra Rocha and Katy Williams.
In singles play the 49ers won three matches to secure the win. The Matadors pushed the 49ers in two of the matches though. At No. 1 singles, No. 67-ranked Grady won 6-1, 6-2 over Silvia Gutierrez. At No. 2 singles, Williams fought back from a set down to beat Koichumanova 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Long Beach closed out the victory at No. 4 singles as Rocha defeated Matijasevic 6-3, 7-6 (4). Northridge's lone point came at No. 5 singles as Myinttun won 6-4, 6-4 over Weeks. The other two singles matches, at No. 3 and No. 6, both had gone to a third set.
The 49ers move to Sunday's championship match where they will take on UC Irvine at 9 am. UCI defeated Cal Poly 4-1 in Saturday's other semifinal.
