Hughes Leads Beach to Series Opening Win
Righthander Wins Seventh as Shaw Closes it Out

LONG BEACH, CA-- Jared Hughes (7-1) pitched eight strong innings and Long Beach State (21-18-1, 5-1-1 Big West) won the series opener over visiting Pacific (22-17, 3-7 Big West) 5-2 on Friday evening.

Bryan Shaw got a game-ending double play ball against Pacific's top hitter and the tying run at the plate in Matt Berezay to earn his third save of the year, after relieving his counterpart, Andrew Liebel, who got in some trouble to start the inning.

Liebel, after striking out the first batter in the ninth, hit the next two, before yielding to Shaw. Hughes struck out five and gave up just two runs on five hits over the first eight.

Sean Boatright, in his second game back in over a month, went 2-for-5 and Brandon Godfrey drove in two as part of a12-hit attack. AJ Pinocchio hit in his eighth-straight game, going 2-for-4.

The Dirtbags roughed up Pacific starter Luke Massetti (5-5) for five runs on nine hits over two and one-third innings, as The Beach broke open the game and led 5-1.

Hughes twice loaded the bases in the first inning, but gave up just a sacrifice fly to give Pacific a 1-0 lead.

LBSU then took the lead in the second, off an RBI single from Godfrey and a double play ball to lead 2-1. The Dirtbags added to the lead in the third with an RBI single from Boatright and a sacrifice fly from Godfrey to make it 4-1. A Danny Espinosa single chased Massetti from the game as the ninth base hit in two and one third innings, and made it 5-1.

The series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
