49ers Fall to San Jose State to End Season
IRVINE, CA-- Cassie Azevedo achieved the Long Beach State scoring record, but despite five goals in her final collegiate game, she could not lead her team to victory, as 10th-seeded Long Beach State (15-14) fell to eighth-seeded San Jose State (12-14) 9-8 on overtime. Azevedo's record-setting goal came from the opposite side of the half line and a skip shot as well, was with three seconds left in the half, and tied the game at 4-4. Azevedo finished her career with 209 goals, giving LBSU an 8-7 lead with 1:39 in the fourth period, and tying the game at 5-5 with 3:20 in the third period. SJSU thought tied it with 1:25 left on Rachel Rhodes second goal and took the eventual lead iwht 1:50 left in the first period on Rhodes third goal. "I think we came a long ways, but we have a long ways to go," said Head Coach Ken Lindgren. "We have the makings of a pretty good team, but it is what the girls do in the off season, as to how far they will go." The Beach overcame a 3-0 first quarter deficit and took a 4-3 lead with a 1:54 left in the period on Azevedo's second goal of the game. It was the final time in the pool for four seniors, starters Azevedo and Tara Campbell, and key reserves Lindsey Machado and Dolores Johnson. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
