49ers Defeat UC Riverside, 4-0
Beach Wins Big West Quarterfinal Match
April 28, 2006 INDIAN WELLS, CA-- The No. 27-ranked Long Beach State women's tennis team got off on the right foot at the 2006 Big West Conference Tennis Championships at Indian Wells Tennis Gardens with a 4-0 win over UC Riverside (5-16) on Friday morning in quarterfinal action. The 49ers (19-4) have won seven consecutive Big West Tournament matches over the past three years.
Long Beach began the morning by winning all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, No. 32-ranked Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks won 8-4 over Casey Cross and Erynne Oki. At the No. 2 spot Sandra Rocha and Katy Williams won 8-0 over Yasaman Sakhakorn and Catrisha Cabanilla and at three doubles Stephanie Bengson and Rachael Porsz won 8-2 over H.R. Espiritu and Colette Chau.
The 49ers needed to win just three matches to earn the win and they did so in convincing fashion. Grady, ranked No. 67 in singles, won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles over Cross. Williams prevailed at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-2 over Sakhakorn and Rocha won at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-0 over Espiritu. Bengson, Weeks and Porsz were all winning their matches when play was called after the 49ers won their fourth point of the match.
The 49ers move to Saturday's semi-finals where they will take on Friday afternoon's winner between Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara (3 pm Friday) at 9 am.
