49ers Head to MPSFs This Week LBSU STATISTICS LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 10-ranked Long Beach State (15-12) will close out its season this weekend in Irvine when they travel to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships as the 10th-seed in the 13-seed tournament. The 49ers, winners of six of their last nine, will open up play against seventh-seeded Arizona State (13-11) on Thursday at 1:45 p.m. If they win, they will play second-seeded UCLA (24-3) on Friday at 1:45 p.m., if they lose, they will play at 11:15 a.m. on Friday. The tournament continues through Sunday. In MPSF Championship play since 2001, LBSU has gone 8-9, finishing no lower than sixth in each of the last four seasons, including three-straight fourth place finishes from 2002-04. LBSU is on its current winning streak after dropping six of eight from February 26 to March 25. Ken Lindgren is in his first season on deck for the women's program, after serving 24 years as the head coach for the 49er men from 1975 to 1998. His 335 wins is seventh all-time in NCAA history. Lindgren is one of two members of the coaching staff in the Water Polo Hall of Fame, as assistant coach Stan Sprague is also an honoree. Two-time All-American Cassie Azevedo is on the verge of toppling the school's scoring record, tallying 204 in her career. She is just two away from the all-time record of 206, set by Angelica Garcia in 2004. Azevedo is already the school's career leader in assists (134) and steals (174), as she looks to become just the second three-time All-American in school-history. Azevedo continues to lead the MPSF in scoring as well with 54 goals this season. She leads the team with 32 steals and 29 assists. Christina Wensman (Mercer Island) is the team's second-best scoring option, tallying a career-best 39 goals this season, while Marina Canetti (Rio de Janeiro) has a school-record 97 earned ejections and 30 goals on the season. Wensman has scored 11 of her goals over the last eight games. Senior Tara Campbell (Montreal), has 16 goals and sophomore Rachelle Denaro (San Diego) has 12 goals for a team that has developed a balanced scoring attack over the last three weeks of the regular season. Kim Hayes is the team's only goalie this season, tallying 191 saves, fourth-best all-time and sixth-best during a single season.
