49ers Fall in Home Finale to UCLA
LONG BEACH, CA-- Kelly Rulon scored three of her game-high four goals in the first period as No. 3-ranked UCLA (24-3, 11-1 MPSF) defeated host No. 10-ranked Long Beach Staet (15-12, 4-8 MPSF) in the home finale for the 49ers. Cassie Azevedo scored two goals for the 49ers, as she is just two away from the school-record set by Angelica Garcia (206) in 2004. UCLA was aided by 11 saves from Emily Fehe. After falling behind 5-1 after the first period, The Beach twice closed to within three in the second period, on a Christina Wensman shot from about five meters out at 4:00, to make it 5-2, and then after Wensman passed to Johnson for a score at 2:23 to make it 6-3. But UCLA put the 49ers away with three-straight scores in the third period to lead 9-3, on back-to-back goals from Kristina Kunkel at 1:19 and with 20 seconds left. Kunkel finished with three goals. Rulon had extended the lead to 7-3 with 4:33 left. Rulon's 6-on-5 goal with 47 seconds left in the first period gave the Bruins a 5-1 lead, after Azevedo's tip shot with 1:08 left, made it 4-1. The 49ers are next in action when they travel to the MPSF Championships beginning on April 27 at UC Irvine. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
