Beach Nearly Comeback from 5-1 Deficit WESTWOOD, CA-- Long Beach State (16-18-1) could not overcome a five-run first inning by the Bruins, as UCLA (21-15) swept the season series for the first time since 1995, with a 9-7 win on Tuesday evening. The Beach inched back in the middle innings, scoring an unearned run in the fifth and two more in the seventh to close to within 9-7. LBSU had a chance in the eighth, with two runners on and one out, but a strikeout and caught stealing ended the threat. In the ninth, LBSU put two more runners on base, but a fielder's choice and a strikeout from Josh Roenicke, who picked up his fourth save with the final two outs, kept UCLA in front for the final time. Evan Longoria had three hits in the game, including two doubles, while AJ Pinocchio had his first multi-game of the season and first home run as well. UCLA though had answers three times for a 49er offense, that led in the first and then twice closed to within two runs in the third and fourth innings. Andrew Liebel gave up three runs to the Bruins in the fourth to extend the lead back up to 9-4, after LBSU closed to 6-4 following a run in the top of the inning. Scott Turmail (1-2) lasted just two-plus innings for LBSU, giving up six runs (three earned) on five hits, leaving after surrending a solo home run to Eric Taylor, Jr., to make it 6-3 in the third. Turmail gave up five runs in the first to spot UCLA a 5-1 lead. LBSU inched back in the third, off a Robert Perry solo home run and a Jose Hernandez, two-run single to close the gap to 5-3. Jason Novak (1-0), on a pitch count, gave up three earned runs on two hits on 47 pitches. The Bruins batted around in the first and took a 5-1 with five runs. Perry misjudged two-straight flyballs to center, allowing three runs to score, the first two on an error, and then another on a ball over his head to give UCLA a 5-1 jump start. Pinocchio, after picking up his first two collegiate hits on Saturday, launched a solo home run to right center in the first to give LBSU an early 1-0 lead. The Beach head to UC Davis to begin a three-game series on Friday. |
