49ers Win Big West Title
Beach Downs UCSB, 6-1
April 15, 2006 SANTA BARBARA, CA-- The No. 28-ranked Long Beach State women's tennis team claimed the Big West Conference regular season championship on Saturday as they defeated UC Santa Barbara 6-1. The Beach improves to 17-4 overall and are 6-0 in the Big West while UCSB fell to 13-8 and 5-2. This is the first year that a regular season champion will be crowned in the Big West. The 49ers will now be the No. 1 seed at the Big West Tournament, April 27-30, with the winner of that event receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. The 49ers have won three of the last four league tournament titles.
The day got off to a rough start as the Gauchos won the doubles point. The lone 49er win came at No. 2 doubles as 30th ranked Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks won 8-6 over Chelsea Glynn and Marielle Gruenig.
In singles play the 49ers turned it up, winning all six matches, five in straight sets. At No. 1 singles, Grad won 6-3, 7-5 over Gruenig. Katy Williams won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles over Glynn and Stephanie Bengson won 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Andrea Pintar at No. 3 singles. At four singles, Sandra Rocha won 6-4, 6-2 over Charlotte Scatliffe, Weeks won 7-5, 6-2 at five singles over Leslie Damion and Rachael Porsz closed out the dfay with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles over Mia Fukushima.
The 49ers will next be in action on Tuesday, April 18 when they play at UC Riverside at 2 pm.
