49ers Defeat Kansas State, 4-3 Beach Wins 13th Straight
March 20, 2006 LONG BEACH, CA-- Thirteen in a row and counting for the Long Beach State women's tennis team. The 20th-ranked 49ers won their 13th consecutive match with a 4-3 win over visiting Kansas State on Monday afternoon at the 49er Campus Courts. The Beach improves to 13-2 overall while the No. 56-ranked Wildcats fall to 6-6.
Long Beach once again began the match by winning the doubles point. The 49ers have won the doubles point in 14 of their 15 matches this season. At No. 1 doubles, Sandra Rocha and Katy Williams won 8-3 over Jessica Simosa and Katerina Kudlackova. At the No. 2 spot, Jessica Weeks and Hannah Grady, who are ranked No. 22 in the country, won 8-4 over Tamar Kvaratskhelia and Maria Perevoschikova. The Beach then came away with a clean sweep as Stephanie Bengson and Rachael Porsz won 8-2 at the No. 3 spot over Fernanda Da Valle and Olga Klimova. Bengson and Porsz and Grady and Weeks both improved to 13-0 this spring in doubles.
In singles play the 49ers won three matches to claim the victory. At No. 1 singles, No. 69-ranked Grady won 6-1, 6-3 over No. 89-ranked Kvaratskhelia. The victory was Grady's tenth straight in singles play and her fifth this spring over a nationally-ranked opponent. At the No. 2 spot, Williams, ranked No. 120, rallied from one set down to defeat Simosa 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The third win came at the six spot as Porsz won 7-6 (4), 6-2 over Klimova.
The 49ers will be in action on Tuesday, March 21 when they host Illinois-Chicago at 2 pm.
