49ers Defeat UC Irvine, 6-1 Beach Wins Ninth in a Row March 2, 2006 LONG BEACH, CA-- The win streak hit nine matches in a row as the 35th-ranked Long Beach State women's tennis team defeated No. 68-ranked UC Irvine 6-1 on Thursday afternoon at the 49er Campus Courts. The Beach improves to 9-2 overall and 3-0 vs. Big West Conference opponents while UCI falls to 4-5 and 2-1.
Long Beach got off on the right foot in doubles action, winning all three matches. At the No. 1 spot, Sandra Rocha and Katy Williams won 8-3 over Izabela Mijic and Jayme Hu. At two doubles, No. 25-ranked Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks improved to 9-0 this spring with an 8-1 over Heidi Kaloi and Inma Agababian. The best match came at the No. 3 spot as the 49ers Rachael Porsz and Stephanie Bengson rallied from a 7-5 deficit to win 9-7 over Becky Bernhard and Ashley Siddall. Porsz and Bengson are also 9-0 this spring in doubles.
Singles action saw the 49ers win five of the six matches, four in straight sets. At the No. 1 spot, Grady recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win over Bernhard, rasing her personal win streak to six in a row in singles play. No. 91-ranked Williams lost to Agababian 6-3, 6-3 and Bengson won 6-2, 6-1 over Mijic at three singles. Rocha came away with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Jessica Broadfoot at four singles, Weeks won 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 over Siddall at the five spot and Porsz came away with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Borowicz at No. 6 singles.
The 49ers will next be in action on Saturday, March 4 when they host the University of the Pacific at 1 pm at the 49er Campus Courts.
