Hughes Settles Down, Hume Picks up First Career Save

LONG BEACH, CA-- Thanks to a little marine layer in the middle innings and a strong pitching performance from Jared Hughes (1-0), No. 16-ranked Long Beach State (1-0) defeated visiting No. 17-ranked USC (0-1) 4-2 on Friday evening. Evan Longoria contributed two hits in the win.

The 3189 fans tonight was the largest regular season crowd, and second largest overall. It was also the eighth sellout all-time.

The Dirtbags had two fog-aided doubles to take a 3-2 lead in the sixth, as two, two-out singles were followed by two top flys to right by Sean Boatright and Brandon Godfrey, which were each lost in the ensuing fog cover by USC rightfielder Roberto Lopez.

LBSU added a run in the seventh off a one-out single from Robert Perry to make it 4-2. The fog then disappeared by the eighth as Donnie Hume retired the side in the ninth for his first career save.

Jared Hughes went the first six, giving up two runs and three hits, at one point retiring 12 in a row following two runs in the first. Ian Kennedy countered with six innings, of three-run, five-hit baseball, as the junior struck out seven.

USC took advantage of early wildness by Hughes, as a bases loaded walk made it 1-0 in the first, his third walk of the inning, before a double play plated the second run. Kennedy meanwhile no hit the 49ers over the first three and one-third innings, before a triple by Longoria broke it up in the fourth.

Hughes meanwhile settled down, setting down 12 in a row into the fifth.

The series continues on Saturday at Dedeaux Field at 1 p.m. and back at Blair Field on Sunday at noon.
