Despite a seven-RBI performance from Dylan Lina and multiple comeback efforts, the Long Beach State Dirtbags fell 13-10 to the San Diego State Aztecs Wednesday night in a back-and-forth midweek contest in San Diego.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — On Wednesday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium in a midweek nonconference matchup, the Long Beach State Dirtbags erased an early five-run deficit and briefly took a late lead, but San Diego State Aztecs scored four runs in the eighth inning to secure a 13-10 victory.
Long Beach State (4-8) jumped out to an early advantage in the top of the first. Jake Evans singled to get on base and Trotter Enright followed with a base hit to advance Evans to scoring position. With two runners on, Dylan Lina launched a three-run home run to left field, his (insert # of home runs) home run this season, giving the Dirtbags a 3-0 lead.
San Diego State (8-5) responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning. After loading the bases, Zach Justice delivered a grand slam to put the Aztecs ahead 4-3. Later in the frame, Jake Jackson doubled and Anthony Marnell IV followed with a two-run single to extend the Aztecs' lead. A Long Beach State error and an RBI single from Jabin Trosky capped the eight-run inning as SDSU stretched their lead to 8-3.
The Dirtbags answered back in the second inning. Damon Valdez singled and Camden Gasser reached on an error, allowing Trevor Goldenetz loaded the bases with a single. Enright drew an RBI walk to bring in the first run of the frame, setting up Lina with bases loaded. The junior third baseman crushed his second home run of the game, a grand slam to deep left, tying the contest at 8-8.
San Diego State regained the lead in the fourth when Jackson delivered an RBI single to score Tyce Peterson and put the Aztecs ahead 9-8.
Long Beach State evened the score once again in the fifth as Reid Montgomery blasted a solo home run to deep right field.
The Dirtbags then took their first lead since the opening frame in the seventh inning. Montgomery singled and stole second before Smith Chandler lined a single to left. Gian De Castro then grounded out to second base, sending Montgomery home to score for a 10-9 advantage.
San Diego State delivered the decisive blow in the eighth inning. Max Farrell singled and Peterson followed with a base hit before Justice walked, with Farrell scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game. Jackson then drove a three-run home run to deep right field, putting the Aztecs ahead 13-10.
Connor Abadie earned the win in relief for San Diego State, while Evan Miranda recorded the save. Ka'imi Kahalekai took the loss for Long Beach State.
Lina led the Dirtbags offensively, going 3-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBIs. Montgomery finished 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and a stolen base, while Evans added two hits. Enright reached base three times with a hit and two walks, and Valdez collected two hits.
