Boatright Leads Dirtbags to a Series Win LOS ANGELES, CA-- Sean Boatright's two-run homer in the eighth off of All-American closer Paul Koss (0-1) led No. 16-ranked Long Beach State (2-0) to a 9-6 series win over host No. 17-ranked USC (0-2) on Saturday afternoon. The win made a winner out of Mike Malott (1-0), who picked up his first Division-I victory since 2002, as he retired all five Trojans he faced, before yielding to Brett Andrade who pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save. Boatright's homer re-took the lead for The Beach, giving LBSU a 7-6 lead, before a two more runs in the ninth made it 9-6. Koss had entered the game following a strong pitching performance from Tommy Milone, hit Evan Longoria, before giving up a homer to deep center. Milone had pitched the four previous shutout innings of relief to shutdown the Dirtbag attack, scattering just three hits before yielding to Koss with a 6-5 lead. Tito Cruz had three hits, while Longoria, Espinosa and Hernandez all had two hits a piece as part of the 15-hit attack. Longoria put the Dirtbags on the board in the first, launching a two-run homer off the Dedeaux Field scoreboard in right to make it 2-0. Longoria than led off the third with a single, stole second and then after reaching third on a groundout, scored a suicide squeeze by Tito Cruz with two outs to make it 3-1. Longoria's throwing error off a bunt attempt in the third would lead to four unearned runs and give the Trojans a 5-3 lead. The error put runners at second and third, USC tied the score with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-3, before a two-run homer by Duda made it 5-3. The Dirtbags then tied it right up the next frame with a two-run double from Danny Espinosa to make it 5-5 in the fourth. Shawn Olsen went the first 3.2 innings for USC, giving up five earned runs on eight hits, but figured in the no-decision after the Trojans tied it in the fifth. Cyle Hankerd's triple to left center broke the tie in the fifth and made it 6-5. LBSU starter Andrew Carpenter went the first five innings, giving up six runs (two earned) on seven hits, striking out five and walking none. The two Southern California teams finish the series on Sunday at noon back at Blair Field. |
