Freshman Picks up First Collegiate Win with Eight Scoreless Innings

LONG BEACH, CA-- Vance Worley (1-2) pitched eight scoreless innings to pick up his first collegiate victory as No. 17-ranked Long Beach State (9-4) swept the series with visiting Illinois-Chicago (2-5), with a 10-0 win on Sunday.

Worley gave up just six hits before yielding to Donnie Hume in the ninth, using just 94 pitches to give LBSU back-to-back shutouts for the first time this season. The Flames managed to score in just one inning (three runs) all weekend, the ninth inning on Friday against Jared Hughes.

After taking a 1-0 lead on a Longoria sacrifice fly in the first, the Dirtbags exploded for seven runs in the second to lead 8-0. LBSU sent 11 batters to plate and back-to-back errors by third baseman Bryan Nolte allowed four of the seven runs to be unearned.

Danny Espinosa's two-run single gave LBSU a 6-0 lead, following a bases load hit by pitch and an RBI single from Robert Perry.

Don Phillis (0-2) last just the first four innings for UIC, giving up eight runs (four earned) on four hits.

The Dirtbags homestand continues with UCLA on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and Baylor for a three-game series starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m. On Wednesday, the Mike Weathers Show will feature Brandon Godfrey and Donald Hume, IV.
