SAN DIEGO, CA – The Long Beach State softball team earned a split in the final day of the 2006 Aztec Invitational on Saturday afternoon, falling to Western Kentucky, 1-0 in the morning game, before topping Wagner, 5-2 in the afternoon session. LBSU is 8-6 on the season.

Long Beach State jumped on Wagner with three runs in the first inning. After Brianna Goad singled to center field, Tiffanie Wedell reached on a fielder's choice and Goad advanced to third on a throwing error by the Wagner short stop. After Jessica Beaver was issued a walk, Goad scored on a passed ball to give LBSU a 1-0 lead. An Ashley Weber sacrifice fly plated Beaver, and a Jonae Perez single to center field scored Michelle Turner, who also walked on her plate appearance.

Wagner fought back with two runs in the second inning to cut the deficit to 3-2, before the 49ers added a run, courtesy of a Turner single to score Goad, in the bottom half of the inning to give LBSU a 4-2 lead.

Long Beach State added one more run in the bottom of the third inning when another Wagner throwing error allowed for Weber to score.

Jennifer Martinez picked up her first win of the season (1-2) allowing just one hit (no runs) over five innings.

Goad finished 2-for-3 with two runs and Turner was 2-for-2.

An Alana Towns solo home run in the fourth inning was the difference in Western Kentucky's 1-0 win over Long Beach State in the morning game.

Long Beach State threatened to tie the score in the top of the fifth inning with runners on first and second base and one out. The 49ers however were unable to advance the runners after two straight outs.

Turner suffered the loss to fall to 5-4. She allowed just one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Weber went 2-for-3 at the plate.

LBSU travels to Arizona for the Wildcat Invitational, Mar. 3-5
