Hughes Douses the Flames LONG BEACH, CA-- Jared Hughes (3-0) pitched eight scoreless innings before tiring in the ninth as No. 17-ranked Long Beach State (7-4) defeated visiting Illinois-Chicago (2-3) 5-3 on Friday evening. Overall, Hughes gave up three runs on five hits over eight and one-third innings, striking out nine and walking none on 102 pitches. "I felt really good out there. I was really balanced and focused," said Hughes. "I was able to put all three of my pithces where I wanted to and I was able to establish myself early." Hughes at one point retired 10 in a row early in the game, six by strikeout, including four in a row in the second and third innings. After hitting a batter to lead off the fifth, he struck out the next three Flames to give him nine over the first five innings. "I think the main thing was that I was getting my breaking pitches over for strikes, and that kept them guessing," said Hughes. Hughes retired another seven in a row before tiring in the ninth and pitched to just two over the minimum heading into the final frame. A one-out bunt base hit in the ninth by Larry Gemp, Jr. set up the team's first run of the game off an RBI double from Justin Johnson. An RBI single by Mark Hallberg cut the lead to 5-2. Bryan Shaw came on in the ninth, and gave up a run on a ground out before getting a game-ending comebacker to Brett Schaefer. Brandon Godfrey drove in two runs and Danny Espinosa had two hits as the first seven Dirtbag batters had at least one hit. LBSU also showed the leather in the game, as Espinosa made two fine plays at short in the sixth, before a diving catch by centerfielder Robert Perry in the seventh continued the team's fine defensive effort. The 49ers broke Zach Peterson's (0-1) 10-game scoreless inning streak to start the season in the fourth, scoring twice to lead 2-0 on an RBI single from Godfrey and a groundout from Tom Wolf. Godfrey's sacrifice fly in the fifth made it 3-0. LBSU added two runs in the seventh off of Adam Worthington to lead 5-0 off a groundout and RBI double from Tito Cruz. Peterson had give up just one hit over the first 10 batters, before yielding to five over the next three innings. The righthander went six innings, giving up three runs on six hits. Long Beach State traded outfielders on its disabled list on Friday, as Wolf was granted his fifth year of eligibility by the NCAA, while Sean Boatright is out for the weekend after tweaking his back. The 49ers and Flames continue the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
