LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State righthander Andrew Carpenter (2-0) hurled a just the fourth one-hitter in 49er history as No. 17-ranked Long Beach State (8-4) took the series with visiting Illinois-Chicago (2-4), 6-0.

Carpenter at one point retired 14 in a row, before Justin Johnson laced a single through the right side in the seventh. Carpenter then extinguished the Flames catcher on a double play ball, retiring the final seven batters of the game. Carpenter, who walked Mark Hallberg to lead off the second, pitched to just one over the minimum and tied his career high with eight strikeouts.

Carpenter's 94 pitch performance equaled Dan Danielson's one-hitter in 1979 against Pepperdine and two other performances by Steve Whiteaker and Dennis Gray in the early 1990's. The 49ers have never had a no-hitter in 52 seasons.

Kip Masuda's three-run homer in the second ignited a five-run inning for The Beach as the freshman launched his first collegiate homer to give LBSU a 3-0 lead. An RBI by Evan Longoria made it 4-0, before a balk made it 5-0. Joe Skinner could not get out of the inning, as the lefthander gave up five runs on five its over an inning and two thirds.

Longoria went 3-for-4, while Brandon Godfrey, Masuda and Matt Cline had two hits a piece as part of an 11-hit attack.

The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m., before the Dirtbags continue the homestand with UCLA on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and Baylor next weekend.
