LONG BEACH, CA-- Redshirt freshman Jefff Greenwood (Whittier) scored the game-winning goal with 4:25 left in the game to lift the Long Beach State men's water polo team to a dramatic 12-11 win over Pepperdine in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) game at the 49er Campus Pool on Sunday. The 12th-ranked 49ers improve to 8-14 overall and 1-5 in the MPSF, while the ninth-ranked Waves fell to 12-15 and 1-4 in league play.
Greenwood and 49er senior Jay Gerardi (Long Beach) each tallied five goals in the game to lead the 49er offensive attack. Kevin Bradley (Long Beach) and Nick Korsgaden (Stockton) tallied the other 49er goals. The five goals by each player tie their previous career-high's. Gerardi has accomplished the feat three times this season and Greenwood twice.
Brett Auer led the Waves with three goals and Clayton Snyder and JP MacDonell each scored twice.
"I was proud of our team today," said 49er Head Coach Gavin Arroyo. "All of our players don't understand that they're good. To be a great athlete you have to believe in yourself. A lot of guys stepped up today for us."
The 49ers looked as if they might be in for a long day after Pepperdine scored five first quarter goals to take a 5-3 lead. The Waves pushed the advantage to 8-4 at 4:24 in the second quarter after a goal by Matt Lee. Long Beach was able to pull to within 8-6 at the half as Greenwood (3:35) and Gerardi (0:34) tallied goals.
The 49ers and Waves played cat-and-mouse in the third quarter as each team traded goals before the 49ers closed out the period with three straight goals. Trailing 10-8, Greenwood scored at 2:37, his third of the day. Gerardi scored his fifth goal at 2:00 to tie the game at 10-10 and Long Beach took its first lead of the game at 0:18 as Greenwood found the back of the net. Pepperdine tied the game at 11 with a goal by Snyder at 6:08, but Greenwood put the game-winner past goalie Travis Stachowski at 4:25 in the fourth.
After a 49er turnover with 0:50 remaining, the Waves had one last chance to tie the game. MacDonell took a shot from 12 yards out with 31 seconds remaining, but it was blocked in the field by a 49er and Long Beach recovered the ball and was able to run out the clock to earn the victory. 49er goalie Steve MacKenzie (Walnut Creek) had 12 goalies saves on the day, seven of which came in the second half when he allowed just three Pepperdine goals.
The 49ers will next be in action on Friday, November 5 when they host Loyola Marymount at the Campus Pool at 3 pm.
