SANTA BARBARA, CA-- The Long Beach State men's water polo team dropped a 9-3 decision at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon. The sixth-ranked Gauchos outscored No. 12 Long Beach State 6-1 in the second half to take a 9-3 victory in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at the Gauchos' Campus Pool. The 49ers fell to 7-14 overall and 0-5 in the MPSF while the Gauchos improved to 17-11 and 2-3 in league play.
The Gauchos missed a pair of shots early in the first quarter before they faced an ejection with 5:35 on the clock. Long Beach took a shot just as the ejected player reentered the water, the ball hit the crossbar and was rebounded by Greg Henneman who shot and scored to put the 49ers on the board. Less than a minute later Travis Buchanan launched a shot that hit the sidebar before landing in the back of the cage to bring the Long Beach lead to 2-0.
UCSB's Ross Sinclair, who tallied three goals on the day, scored his first of the game late in the first quarter to cut the deficit to 2-1. Tamas Donauer tied the game at 2-2 with a goal midway through the second quarter and then Miles Price finally captured the lead for the Gauchos with a cross-cage shot with 2:46 on the clock to put the score at 3-2 heading into halftime. Price also tallied three goals for the Gauchos.
Long Beach struck first in the second half as Kevin Bradley was able to capitalize on a six-on-five power play to once again tie the score up, 3-3. But from there on it was all Santa Barbara. The Gauchos quickly returned the favor as Price put away another cross-cage shot on a man-up situation to reclaim the lead. With 2:20 left to play in the third, Sinclair took off on a fast break. Goalie Rick Wright connected with Sinclair who cut his player off and fired in his second goal of the game. Heading into the final quarter, the Gauchos led 5-3. UCSB dominated the fourth quarter as they posted four unanswered goals including number three from both Price and Sinclair.
Junior goalkeeper Rick Wright tallied seven saves on the afternoon with a game-high three in both the first and third quarters. Steve MacKenzie racked up nine saves for Long Beach.
The 49ers will next be in action on Sunday when they host Pepperdine at the Campus Pool at 12 pm.
