49ers Finish Season At 11-17

The Records: The 49er men’s water polo team finished
its 2006 season at 11-17 and took seventh place at the MPSF Tournament.
Long Beach went 2-6 in the MPSF, tying for sixth place in the final league
standings.
National Rankings: The 49ers are ranked No. 10 in the country.
The Coach: Gavin Arroyo (California ‘94) is 11-17
(.393) after his first year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Arroyo
spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Cal and was an eight-year
member of the U.S. National Team (1993-2000), competing in the 1996 and
2000 Olympic Games.
49ers Take 7th At MPSF Tournament: Clint Wilson scored
a career-high five goals, including the game-winner with 20 seconds remaining,
to lift the 49ers to an 12-11 win over UC Irvine in the 7th place game
at the MPSF Tournament. Jay Gerardi added two goals in the victory and
goalie Steve MacKenzie had 10 saves. In the opening round the 49ers fell
to eventual tournament winner Cal, 17-6. Greg Henneman and Wilson both
tallied two goals. In the consolation semi’s, Long Beach lost to
Pacific 11-10, as the Tigers scored the game-winner with one second remaining.
Henneman, Nick Korsgaden and Travis Buchanan each had two goals. MacKenzie
recorded 14 saves. For the tournament, Wilson tallied seven goals and
Henneman four. MacKenzie had 34 saves (11.33 saves per game) hitting double
digits in all three games.
So Close: Six of the 49ers 17 losses this season were
by just one goal and three more were by two goals.
Jay Gerardi: Senior All-American Jay Gerardi (Long Beach)
has had an outstanding senior campaign for the 49ers. Gerardi led the
team in scoring with 49 goals. He tallied at least one goal in 24 of his
27 games and he has 12 multiple-goal games this season. Gerardi scored
a career-high tying five goals in the 49ers 12-11 win over Pepperdine
on November 5. He has scored five goals three times this season, also
accomplishing the feat on October 7 vs. Pepperdine and UC Davis. Gerardi
finishes with 148 career goals and finished No. 9 all-time at Long Beach
State.
Jeff Greenwood: Redshirt freshman Jeff Greenwood (Whittier)
had a solid year for the 49ers, his first as a starter. Greenwood finished
second on the team with 46 goals. He tallied 13 goals in the final seven
games of the season. Greenwood had a career-high tying five goals on November
5 vs. Pepperdine, including scoring the game-winner with 4:25 left to
play. Greenwood had 14 multiple-goal games this season. He also scored
five goals earlier this season in a 15-10 win over Pomona-Pitzer. Greenwood,
the MPSF Mikasa Player of the Week on October 2, scored in 22 of the 28
games this season.
Nick Korsgaden: Junior Nick Korsgaden (Stockton) finished
fourth on the team this year with 28 goals. Korsgaden, in his first year
as a starter, had a stretch earlier this season where he scored in 10
consecutive games. He scored a career-best three goals on Sept. 30 vs.
UC San Diego and he has eight multiple-goal games this year. Korsgaden
started in all 28 games this year and is the 49ers top sprinter.
Clint Wilson: Junior Clint Wilson (Long Beach) had a
big MPSF Tournament, scoring seven goals in the three games. He had a
career-best five in the win over UC Irvine in the 7th place game. Wilson
finished third on the team with 30 goals and started in all 28 games.
He scored four goals in the 9-7 win over No. 6-ranked Loyola Marymount
on November 10. Wilson scored a goal in19 of the 28 games this season.
Kevin Bradley: Senior Kevin Bradley (Long Beach) has
been a steady force for the 49ers all season. Bradley finished fifth on
the team with 22 goals this year. He has played in all 28 games, starting
five times. Bradley scored one goal in seven of the last nine games, including
two at the MPSF Tournament. He scored two goals in a game five times this
season.
Travis Buchanan: Junior Travis Buchanan (Manhattan Beach)
excelled in his first year as a starter. Buchanan started in 27 games
and seventh on the team with 14 goals. He tallied two goals against Pacific
at the MPSF Tournament. He also scored a career-high two goals on October
15 vs. Loyola Marymount.
Steve MacKenzie: Junior Steve MacKenzie (Walnut Creek)
closed out the season in great fashion. He had 34 saves at the MPSF Tournament
(11.33 spg), recording double-digits in each game. He tallied 14 saves
against Pacific and had 10 against UC Irvine and Cal. He had a great outing
in the 7-5 win over UC Irvine in the regular season finale. MacKenzie
recorded a career-high 16 saves, seven in the fourth quarter as he shut
out the Anteaters. In the 49ers 9-7 win over LMU he recorded eight goalie
saves. After allowing four goals in the first quarter to the Lions, he
allowed just three the final three quarters of the contest. In the win
over Pepperdine he limited the Waves to just three second half tallies
and he recorded seven of his 12 saves in the second half. MacKenzie averaged
9.48 saves per game and he had a 9.67 GAA. His 256 saves this season ranks
tied for No. 4 all-time at Long Beach State. The weekend of October 28-29
he recorded a total of 31 saves (10.33 saves per game) in three outings,
including 14 saves at Stanford. MacKenzie had 14 games this season where
he has recorded double digits in saves.
MPSF Statistics: In the final MPSF statistics the 49ers
Jay Gerardi finished eighth in goals per game at 1.81 with 49 goals in
27games. Jeff Greenwood finished 10th at 1.64 goals per game and Clint
Wilson was 34th at 1.07. In the goalie stats, Steve MacKenzie finished
third in saves per game at 9.48 and 10th in goals against average at 9.67.
As a team, the 49ers were eighth in team points at 8.29 and eighth in
team goalkeeping at 9.89 GAA.
NCAA Championships: The NCAA Championships will be held
December 2 & 3 at Loyola Marymount University. On Saturday, USC (25-1)
will take on Navy (24-5) at 12 pm, followed by California (29-4) vs. UC
San Diego (25-5). The consolation and championship games will be held
on Sunday at 12 and 2 pm. USC is the number one seed, Cal is number two,
UCSD in three and Navy is the number four seed.
