IRVINE, CA-- Junior Clint Wilson (Long Beach) scored the game-winning goal with 20 seconds left on the clock lifting the Long Beach State men's water polo team to a 12-11 win over UC Irvine in the 7th place game at the MPSF Tournament. Wilson scored a career-best five goals in the game, including two in the fourth quarter comeback. The win concludes the 49ers season at 11-17 while UCI ends at 10-21.
Long Beach trailed 10-8 at the 6:58 mark in the fourth quarter after a goal by UCI's Jamie Frank. From there on, the 49ers out-scored the Anteaters 4-1 to capture the win. 49er goals by Mike Del Grande (3:40) and Kevin Bradley (3:05) tied the contest at 10-10. UCI went up 11-10 with 1:30 left on goal by Cole Bielskis, his fourth of the contest. Long Beach came right down the pool and tied the game as Wilson scored with 1:04 remaining. After a UCI ejection at 0:42, Wilson found the back of the net with 20 seconds left on the clock for the game-winner.
49er goalie Steve MacKenzie recorded 10 goalie saves, including three in the fourth quarter. Senior Jay Gerardi added two goals for the 49ers as well.
No team led by more than two goals throughout the contest. The 49ers jumped to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter after scoring three consecutive goals (Jeff Greenwood, Wilson-2). UCI bounced back with three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead early in the second quarter. The game was tied at the half, 5-5, after UCI's Curt Merlo scored with three seconds remaining on the clock.
With the contest tied 8-8 after three quarters, UCI jumped out to a 10-8 lead as Jesse Hatch (7:39) and Frank (6:58) tallied early goals.
Gerardi, one of just three seniors on the squad (Bradley, Tyler Anderson), finished his 49er career in ninth place on the career scoring chart with 148 career goals. MacKenzie concluded a strong first season recording 256 saves, a mark which ties for No. 4 all-time on the 49er single season chart. MacKenzie also recorded 13 games with double-digits in saves, including the final two of the season (14 vs.Pacific, 10 vs. UCI) at the MPSF Tournament.
