IRVINE, CA-- John Mann and Michael Sharf each scored three goals to lift No. 2-ranked California to a 17-6 win over No. 10-ranked Long Beach State in a quarterfinal game at the 2006 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships. Greg Henneman and Clint Wilson led the 49ers (10-16) with two goals apiece. Cal improves to 27-4 with the win and moves on to Saturday's semi-finals.
Trailing 2-0 early on, the 49ers got on the board at 5:52 as Wilson scored his first goal of the day. But for the next two and a half quarters is was all Cal. The Golden Bears scored the next 12 goals to take a 14-1 lead mid-way through the third quarter. Long Beach cut the deficit to 14-3 at the end of the third quarter after goals from Kevin Bradley (3:08) and Wilson (1:17). In the fourth quarter the 49ers scored three of the first four goals as Travis Benson (6:52) and Henneman (4:53, 3:33) tallied for Long Beach.
Cal had 10 different players score in the victory. Andrija Vasiljevic, Marty Matthies and Spencer Warden each scored twice. Starting goalie Mark Sheredy recorded five goalie saves.
49er goalie Steve MacKenzie recorded 10 saves in three quarters of play. He now has recorded 232 saves this season, a mark which is tied for No. 8 on the Long Beach State single season chart. Senior Tyler Anderson played the fourth quarter in goal for The Beach recording three saves while allowing three goals. Cal out-shot the 49ers 37-23.
Long Beach will be in action on Saturday at 11:30 am when they take on Pacific. The tournament continues through Sunday.
