49ers Mini Tournament
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State senior Jay Gerardi scored the game-winning goal 32 seconds into sudden victory to lift the 49ers to an 11-10 victory over No. 8-ranked UC Davis (8-8) at the LBSU Mini Tournament on Saturday. Gerardi tallied a career-high five goals in the contest, improving the 49ers record to 3-6. Earlier in the day the 49ers fell to Pepperdine 12-9, as Gerardi had five goals in that game as well. In the nightcap, Long Beach State and UC Davis battled throughout, with no team leading by more than two goals (4-2 UC Davis). With the game tied 8-8 late in the fourth quarter, the 49ers went up 9-8 after Gerardi scored on a penalty shot at 0:50. Davis sent the game into overtime as David Welch scored his second goal of the day at 0:32 to tie the contest. After a scoreless first overtime, Long Beach’s Jeff Greenwood scored at 2:34 in the second OT, giving the 49ers the lead. Davis came right back to tie the game at 10-10 after a goal at 1:42 by Grant Muenter. After the second overtime ended at 10-10, the teams played sudden victory, whoever scores first wins. Long Beach won the sprint and Gerardi found the back of the net with just three seconds left on the shot clock to secure the win. Greenwood added two goals for the 49ers and goalie Steve MacKenzie tallied 12 goalie saves. Welch, Nick Arrigo and Adam Lindsay all scored twice for UC Davis. In the early afternoon game, UCSB (13-6) defeated Pepperdine (5-9) 10-9. Ross Sinclair and Matt Dale scored twice for the Gauchos who rallied from a 5-3 halftime deficit. Trailing 7-6 early in the fourth quarter, UCSB scored four consecutive goals to take command at 10-7. dane Lindstrom (6:10), Ratko Paunovic (5:20), Kendall Olds (3:58) and Sean Castillo (3:27) led the Gaucho comeback. Doug Mannhad three goals for Pepperdine and Dorian Beaney added two. In its opener, the 49ers got five goals from Jay Gerardi, but the Waves broke open the game in the fourth quarter with four consecutive goals. The Waves JP MacDonell tallied four goals and Nick Corjon three to lead the Pepperdine attack. The Waves led 4-0 in the first 4:41 of the game, but the 49ers slowly chipped into the lead. Gerardi tallied two goals in the second quarter as the 49ers trailed 6-4 at the half. In the third quarter, Gerardi’s fourth goal of the day, with 12 seconds left on the clock tied the game at 8-8. Pepperdine scored on its first possesion of the quarter as Clayton Snyder scored close to the cage at 7:02. From there the Waves tallied three more goals to push the advantage to 12-8. In the opening game of the day UC Davis held of UCSB 4-3. The Aggies jumped to a 3-0 lead after one quarter and led 4-1 after a Joseph Smith goal at 3:56 in the second quarter. Neither team scored in the third, but in the fourth the Gauchos fought back. Ross Sinclair scored at 4:40 and Miles Price tallied his second goal of the day at 2:11 to cut the deficit to 4-3. Aggie goalie Mike McGee, who recorded 11 goalie saves, stopped two UCSB penalty shots in the fourth quarter, the last coming with 1:08 left in the contest by UCSB’s Zsombor Vincze. The 49ers will next be in action on Sunday, October 8 when they host Brown at 12 pm at the 49er Campus Pool. |
