Silos Scores Game-Winner in 73rd Minute as Beach Start Big West 3-0-0

October 6, 2006

BOX SCORE

GOLETA, CA-- A stifling defense and a goal from sophomore Kim Silos in the 73rd minute led Long Beach State (11-2-0, 3-0-0 Big West) to their sixth 1-0 victory of the season, a one-goal triumph over host UC Santa Barbara (2-6-4, 0-1-0 Big West) on Friday evening.

Sahar Haghdan did the dirty work for the 49ers, using her footwork to get deep in the box, before crossing it to Dana Farquhar, who found Silos in front of the net eight yards out to give LBSU a 1-0 advantage.

It was then up to the defense, which posted its ninth shuout of the season, as the 49ers allowed just four second half shots and for a 29-minute stretch held the Gauchos shotless. The backline of Natalie Messina, Tiffany Vaught, Julie Megorden and Jenna Duncan were a key reason, providing a suffocating defense which surrounded each offensive possession for UCSB. When Messina left due to an ankle injury late in the first half, Amanda Perry stepped in and did not miss a beat for the remaining 47 minutes setting up the winning score.

Silos twice hovered around the goal in the second half, before breaking through in the 73rd minute. LBSU opened the half with two quick shots, as Megorden missed a shot high and Silos' shot was caught in the opening minutes of the second half. Silos' line drive in the 66th minute was caught by UCSB goalkeeper Katie Wright.

UCSB nearly took the lead in the 54th minute, but Allie Kueny's goal from five yards out was waved off due to offsides.

UCSB twice broke into a seam over the first 45 minutes, taking seven first half shots, as Chandi Bickford missed a header on a breakaway in the 18th minute, before goalkeeper Liz Ramos intercepted a pass by Sami Svrcek inside the box during the 23rd minute. UCSB outshot The Beach 7-to-2 in the first half, rarely shooting from inside the 18-yard line.

The 49ers remain on the Central Coast when they travel North to Cal Poly for a match on Sunday at 1 p.m.
