Williams & Weeks Advance In Singles
Both Advance To Third Round With Straight Set Wins

FULLERTON, CA-- Long Beach State advanced two singles players to the
third round on the opening day of the 2006 Cal State Fullerton Fall Intercollegiates.
Nationally-ranked Katy Williams (#85), the tournament's number one seed,
and 49er sophomore Jessica Weeks won their second round matches after
receiving first round byes.
Williams disposed of LMU's Shawnell Russell 6-1, 6-2, while Weeks prevailed
6-1, 6-0 over Cal Poly's Devin Peek. Both 49ers move to Saturday's third
round at 9 am. Freshman Nina Burgoon saw her first action as a 49er on
Friday. She advanced out of the first round by a walk-over after USC's
Ashley Ellis was a no show for the match. In the second round, Burgoon
fell 7-6 (2), 6-0 to Shannon Brady of Cal Poly. Two other 49ers fell in
the first round and will continue play on Saturday in the back draw, along
with Burgoon. Junior Emmanuelle Tabatruong fell 7-5, 6-1 to Steffi Wong
of Cal Poly, while freshman Denise Liebschner fell 6-2, 6-2 to a very
strong Anete Bandere of Pepperdine.
In doubles action the 49ers won both of their first round matches. Weeks
and Burgoon claimed an easy 8-0 win over LMU's Audra Silman and Shawnell
Russell. Tabatroung and Liebschner prevailed 8-6 over Brandy Andrews and
Cheyenne Inglis of CS Fullerton. Both duos move on to Saturday's second
round at 1:30 pm.
