Grady Picks Up Win Over Ranked Opponent
Defeats North Carolina's Austin Smith

PACIFIC PALISADES, CA-- Long Beach State sophomore Hannah Grady (Coventry,
England) had a strong opening day at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American
Championships at the Riviera Country Club. Grady, who is ranked No. 38
in the country in singles, won her first match of the day over a nationally-ranked
opponent, but then fell in a tough second round match.
In her opening match, Grady bested No. 117 Austin Smith of North Carolina
5-7, 7-6 (1), 6-3. Grady was down 5-2 in the second set, but battled back
to win the tie-breaker going away (7-1). She then took over in the third
set, prevailing 6-3. Smith is the daughter of tennis great Stan Smith.
The victory was Grady's sixth over a nationally-ranked opponent in her
49er career. Later in the day she fell to Fresno State's Renata Kuckerova,
6-4, 7-5.
In doubles action, the 49er duo of Grady and Jessica Weeks, ranked No.
23 nationally, dropped an 8-3 decision to the No. 25-ranked doubles team
of Daniela Bercek and Elizabeth Plotkin of Duke.
This weekend the 49ers will be in action as a team at the CS Fullerton
Fall Intercollegiates on October 6-8.
