49ers Head To Northern California Beach Takes on Stanford, UC Davis and Air Force

The Record: The 49er men's water polo team will head to Northern California this weekend to take on Stanford, UC Davis and Air Force. The 49ers are 5-11 overall and fell to 0-3 in the MPSF with home losses this past weekend to Pacific and California. Stanford is 11-5 overall and 3-1 in the MPSF, UC Davis is 10-10 on the season and Air Force stands at 8-11. The UC Davis and Air Force games will be a part of the Davis Shoot Out.
National Rankings: The 49ers head into this week ranked No. 14 in the country.
The Series: The 49ers trail in their series with Stanford by a 54-8 count. The Cardinal defeated the 49ers 10-7 on October 14 at the SoCal Tournament. Stanford has won 10 in a row over the 49ers. Long Beach leads its series with UC Davis by a 15-2 count, including an 11-10 sudden victory win over the Aggies on October 7 at the Campus Pool. The 49ers lead their series with Air Force, 20-6. The 49ers defeated the Falcons 8-7 on October 15 at the SoCal Tournament.
The Coach: Gavin Arroyo (California ‘94) is 5-11 (.313) in his first year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Arroyo spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Cal and was an eight-year member of the U.S. National Team (1993-2000), competing in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games.
49ers Drop Two At Home: The 49ers fell twice at home this past weekend. On Saturday, Pacific defeated Long Beach 11-5. The Tigers jumped to a 5-0 lead after one quarter. The closest the 49ers were able to get was 6-3. Freshman Travis Benson had a career-best two goals in that game. On Sunday the 49ers fell to Cal, 14-5. The Golden Bears took a 6-2 lead after one quarter and extended it to 9-4 at the half. Nick Korsgaden and Jeff Greenwood each scored twice for the 49ers.
Jay Gerardi: Senior All-American Jay Gerardi (Long Beach) scored two goals this past weekend and moved into the No. 10 spot all-time at Long Beach State in career goals. Gerardi currently stands at 129 goals in his 49er career. Gerardi leads the team with 30 goals this season. He has scored at least one goal in 15 of the 16 games. Gerardi tallied a career-best five goals against Pepperdine and UC Davis on October 7 at home. In the win over Davis he scored the game-winning goal 32 seconds into the sudden victory period. Gerardi has six multiple-goal outings.
Jeff Greenwood: Redshirt freshman Jeff Greenwood (Whittier) is second on the team with 27 goals this year. Sunday he scored two goals in the loss to Cal. He found the back of the net four times against LMU on October 15, the second-most goals he has scored as a 49er. Greenwood, the MPSF Mikasa Player of the Week on October 2, has scored in 12 of the 16 games, but in eight of those contests he has scored two or more goals. He recorded a career-best five goals in the win over Pomona-Pitzer on September 30.
Nick Korsgaden: Junior Nick Korsgaden (Stockton) keeps putting up impressive numbers this season. Korsgaden had two goals on Sunday against California and six goals in the four games at the SoCal Tournament. Korsgaden is third on the team with 21 goals scored and has seven multiple-goal games. Earlier this year against UC San Diego he scored a career-best three goals.
Travis Benson: Freshman Travis Benson (Humble, TX) is seeing more and more playing time this year. Benson had a career-best two goals on Saturday against Pacific. Saturday was also Benson's 18th birthday. Benson was originally going to redshirt this year, but the redshirt was pulled in earl October due to a lack of depth at the center position. Benson has three goals on the season, with his first collegiate goal coming on October 8 vs. Brown.
Steve MacKenzie: Junior Steve MacKenzie (Walnut Creek) has started in goal 15 times this season and is averaging 8.80 saves per game. MacKenzie, who has hit double digits in saves seven times this year, has 12 saves against UCLA and 10 against Stanford at the SoCal Tournament. His season-high of 13 saves came against Navy at the NorCal Tournament.
