49ers Fall To Pacific Travis Benson Tallies Two Goals

LONG BEACH, CA-- Matt Turnbull scored four goals and Pacific jumped to an early 5-0 first quarter lead en route to an 11-5 victory over Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) game at the Campus Pool. The Tigers improve to 13-9 with the win and 1-1 in the MPSF, while the 49ers fall to 5-10 and 0-2 in league play.
The Tigers, who are ranked No. 6 in the country, jumped to a 5-0 lead after one quarter. Duje Kaurloto tallied the first goal of the day at 7:02 on a penalty shot. Andy Skora then scored at 6:15 and Dragan Bakic at 5:09 giving UOP a quick lead. The 49ers failed to score in the opening quarter despite having three six-on-five opportunities.
Turnbull's first goal of the day, at 5:54 in the second quarter, gave UOP a 6-0 lead before the 49ers were able to score. Jay Gerardi scored at 5:26 and freshman Travis Benson celebrated his 18th birthday with a career-high two goals, scoring at 4:37 and 3:33 in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 6-3. Turnbull closed out the quarter with two goals (2:25, 1:40) to give the Tigers an 8-3 halftime lead.
Clint Wilson and Kevin Bradley scored the final two 49er goals. Kaurloto and Bakic each tallied two goals for the Tigers. In goal, Brian Domecus had eight saves for Pacific and Steve MacKenzie had five for the 49ers.
The 49ers will next be in action on Sunday, October 22 when they host Cal at 12 pm at the 49er Campus Pool.
