COMMERCE , CA-- The 49er men's water polo team dropped two tough games
at the SoCal Tournament on Saturday. The No. 14-ranked 49ers (4-8) dropped
their morning contest 10-7 to No. 5-ranked Stanford (7-4). The loss snapped
a short two-game winning streak for the 49ers (4-7). In its nightcap,
Long Beach fell to No. 4-ranked UCLA (8-2) by a 6-4 count. USC is the
host school for the SoCal Tournament, but both games were played at the
Commerce Aquatics Complex in Commerce, CA.
Against Stanford, Nick Korsgaden scored two goals to lead the 49ers. Greg
Henneman, Kevin Bradley, Jay Gerardi, Clint Wilson and Jeff Greenwood
all tallied one goal. The 49ers trailed 6-4 at the half, but cut the deficit
to 7-6 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter the Cardinal were able
to out-score Long Beach 3-1 to secure the victory. Drac Wigo led Stanford
with three goals while Tyler Drake and William Hindle-Katel both scored
twice.
In the evening contest, UCLA jumped to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter
en route to the victory. The 49ers were held to just one goal through
three quarters as the Bruins built a 6-1 lead. Long Beach tallied three
fourth quarter goals to cut the deficit to 6-4. Gerardi, Korsgaden, Greenwood
and Wilson tallied the 49er goals. Scott Davidson led the Bruins with
two goals.
The 49ers will continue play on Sunday as they take on Loyola Marymount
at 11:20 am at the Coliseum Pool on the USC Campus.
