49ers Fall At Pepperdine, 6-1 Two Doubles Teams Beat Ranked Opponents January 28, 2006
MAILBU, CA-- The Long Beach State women's tennis team got the day off to a great start by winning the doubles point and defeating two nationally-ranked doubles teams, but No. 28-ranked Pepperdine rebounded during singles play, sweeping all six matches, to come away with a 6-1 win over the No. 57-ranked 49ers on Saturday afternoon. The Waves improve to 3-0 on the year with the win while the 49ers fall to 0-2.
In doubles, the 49ers pulled off two major wins. At No. 1 doubles, Sandra Rocha and Katy Williams defeated No. 22-ranked Sylvia Kosakowski and Merve Asimgil 8-5. At No. 2 doubles the 49ers Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks won 8-5 over No. 21-ranked Bianca Dulgheru and Eva Dickes. The Waves won the third doubles match 8-3 as Natalie Braverman and Caroine Raba defeated Rachael Porsz and Krystina Katayama.
In singles play the Waves was all six matches. At No. 1 singles, Dulgheru defeated Grady 6-3, 6-1. Dulgheru is ranked No. 15 in the nation in the ITA pre-season rankings. At No. 2 singles Kosakowski defeated Williams 7-6 (7-5), 6-0. The lone set the 49ers won in singles came at the No. 6 spot as Porsz fell in three sets to Asimgil 2-6, 6-4, 2-6.
The 49ers will next be in action on Thursday, February 2 when they host San Diego State at 2 pm at the 49er Tennis Courts.
