49ers Drop Opener At USC Rachael Porsz Wins Singles Match At No. 6 Spot January 20, 2006
LOS ANGELES, CA-- The No. 5-ranked University of Southern California (2-0) women's tennis team defeated No. 57 Long Beach State (0-1) 6-1 on Friday afternoon at Mark Stadium on the USC campus.
The Women of Troy got off to a good start by two of the three doubles matches and winning the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Lindsey Nelson and Luana Magnani won 8-4 over Sandra Rocha and Katy Williams. At No. 2 doubles the 49er pair of Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks came back from an 3-0 deficit to win 8-5 over Amanda Fink and Carine Vermeulen, while at the No. 3 spot Dianne Matias and Anca Anastasiu won 8-1 over Rachael Porsz and Krystina Katayama.
In singles action the lone 49er victory came at the No. 6 spot as Porsz won 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Whitney Peterson. At No. 1 singles, Nelson came from behind to defeat Grady 3-6, 7-6, 10-5. At No. 2 singles, Fink, who is ranked No. 3 nationally in singles action, defeated Williams 6-2, 6-0. Matias, ranked No. 78, defeated Stephanie Bengson at the No. 3 spot, Vermeulen won at No. 4 singles 6-4, 7-5 over Rocha and at the No. 5 spot Anastasiu won 7-6, 6-3 over Weeks.
The 49ers will next be in action on Saturday, January 28 when they compete at No. 28-ranked Pepperdine at 11 am in Malibu.
