Bengson Earns National Ranking Sophomore Checks In At No. 115 September 6, 2005 LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State sophomore Stephanie Bengson earned a big honor this week as she is ranked No. 115 in singles action in the initial ITA NCAA Division I Women's Tennis National Rankings. The ITA has ranked the top 125 collegiate players heading into the 2005-06 season. The pre-season team rankings will be released later this month. The pre-season national ranking is the second consecutive for the 49ers as last year Nicole Bouffler was ranked No. 65 in the pre-season poll.
Bengson accumulated a 16-8 mark in singles play last year, competing at the No. 2 singles spot. She was named first team All-Big West Conference and was voted the Big West Freshman of the Year. Bengson is the lone 49er ranked in the top 125 and only one of two Big West players. UCSB's Marielle Greunig is ranked No. 124.
Bengson defeated two opponents last year who are ranked this year. She downed Notre Dame's Brook Buck 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 last year and Buck is ranked No. 55 in the pre-season rankings. The other win came against No. 71 Dominika Dieskova of Oregon. Bengson downed Dieskova last season 6-3, 6-3.
The 49ers are coming off a 15-11 mark and a No. 59 national ranking in 2005. The Beach won its second consecutive Big West championship, and third in the last four years, last April.
Long Beach State opens the fall portion of its schedule on October 7-9 when they compete at the CS Fullerton Fall Intercollegiates. Practice for the 49ers begins on September 19.
