ANNAPOLIS, MD-- The No. 5-ranked Long Beach State men's water polo team got off to a great start in the 2005 season by winning all four of its games at the Navy Labor Day Open. On Sunday the 49ers improved to 4-0 with wins over Iona (16-3) and Bucknell (11-6). Senior Brett McCleave tallied eight goals in the two wins, and finished the tournament scoring 16 goals in the four victories.

Nine different players scored on Sunday morning as the 49ers raced to a 16-3 win over Iona. McCleave led the way with four goals for the 49ers while Stefan Ludecke added three and Erik Geoffroy and Jay Gerardi added two each. Goalie Thomas Onyshko finished with five goalie saves while allowing just three goals, none in the second half. Long Beach jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one quarter and led 6-3 at the half. The second half was all Long Beach State as the 49ers out-scored the Gaels 10-0.

In its final game of the tournament, McCleave scored four times, and Brad Scoles added three, as LBSU defeated Bucknell 11-6. Reid Tomassi scored once as did Ludecke, Gerardi and John Foster. The 49ers took control of the game in the second quarter by out-scoring the Bison 4-1, expanding a 3-2 first quarter lead to 7-3 at the half.

"We did some things really well this weekend, but there are still some things we need to work on," said Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo. "Our chemistry is getting better. I'm very happy that this is the first time in three years that we have gone 4-0 at this tournament. The last two years we dropped a game along the way. This was a good way to start."

The 49ers will next be in action next weekend when they take part in the Inland Empire Tournament, hosted by Redlands University.
