SANTA CRUZ, CA-- The eighth-ranked Long Beach State (12-4) men's water polo team split two games on Sunday at the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest. In the opener, nine different players scored as the 49ers rolled to a 13-6 win over Pomona-Pitzer. In the afternoon the 49ers fell behind early and played catch-up all game, but fell to No. 5-ranked UC San Diego, 12-10.
In the win over the Sagehens, Brad Scoles, Erik Geoffroy, Travis Buchanan and Erik Markle all tallied two goals. Long Beach jumped to a 6-1 lead after one quarter and extended that lead to 9-1 at the half. Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo was able to utilize his bench thoroughly in the victory. Buchanan had played in just four games heading into the day and had scored one goal on the season. His two goals scored tied his personal-best which he set last year against Chapman. Markle was appearing in his fourth game of the season and had tallied two goals on the year, matching that total against the Sagehens.
In goal, senior Thomas Onyshko played the first two quarters, garnering nine saves. Freshman Derek Wiebe-Bailey played the entire second half, finishing with three saves.
In its final game, UC San Diego raced to a 6-3 lead after one quarter and held on from there to win 12-10. Brett McCleave tallied four goals for the 49ers, while Jay Gerardi, Joe Sherrin and Geoffroy all had two goals. Onyshko had a season-high 11 goalies saves.
The 49ers will next be in action on Saturday, Oct. 1 when they play a non-conference game at UC San Diego at 12 pm.
