The Record: Long Beach State suffered its first losses of the season this past weekend at the SoCal Tournament. The Beach is 9-3 on the season and will be competing this weekend at the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest. The 49ers will play Air Force and UC Davis on Saturday and then tangle with Pomona-Pitzer and UC San Diego on Sunday. Long Beach is ranked No. 8 in the country this week, while Air Force is No. 18, UC Davis No. 13 and UCSD stands at No. 5.
The Coach: Rick Azevedo is 99-81 (.550) in his seventh year as the head coach at Long Beach State.
The Series: The 49ers are 18-6 all-time vs. the Air Force Academy. The last meeting came last year at the NorCal Tournament, an 8-6 49er triumph. Long Beach has won the last four meeting with Air Force. LBSU is 12-2 all-time vs. UC Davis, with the last meeting coming in 1997, a 7-6 49er win at the Air Force Tournament. The 49ers are 39-10 vs. UC San Diego, recently dropping an 11-10 decision to the Tritons last weekend.
SoCal Tournament Recap: The 49ers went 1-3 at the SoCal Tournament last weekend. Both losses on Sunday were by one goal, including one in sudden victory. Brett McCleave led the way with 10 goals in the four games, while Jay Gerardi added seven.
LBSU 9, Pacific 7: McCleave had three goals and Reid Tomassi two as the 49ers rebounded from a 5-2 halftime deficit to defeat the Tigers. LBSU out-scored UOP 5-1 in the third quarter to take the lead. Goalie Thomas Onyshko had 10 goalie saves. USC 12, LBSU 6: USC broke open a 6-4 game by scoring five unanswered goals in the third quarter en route to the victory. The loss was the first of the year for the 49ers. McCleave and Gerardi had two goals each. UC San Diego 11, LBSU 10: UCSD scored 23 seconds into sudden victory lifting the Tritons to an 11-10 win. Jonathan Hopkins scored six goals for UCSD, including the game-winner. McCleave, Tomassi, Gerardi and Brad Scoles each scored twice. LBSU led 9-7 with 1:49 left in regulation, but the Tritons tied the game, sending it to overtime. UC Irvine 7, LBSU 6: Tim Hutten scored five goals, including the game-winner with 4:11 left in the game to lift UCI to a 7-6 win in the 7th place game. UCI led 3-0 early on, but the 49ers finally battled back to tie the game 6-6 on a Gerardi goal at 6:24 in the fourth. McCleave led the 49ers with three goals.
Offensive Firepower: Through the first 12 games of the season the 49ers have hit double digits in scoring nine times. The Beach is currently averaging 11.75 goals per game. With 141 goals scored thus far, the 49ers are looking to break the school-record of 313 goals set in both 1981 and 1985. In 1981 the 49ers finished 25-9, averaging 9.21 goals per game. In 1985 the 49ers were 23-10, averaging 9.48 goals per outing.
Brett McCleave: Senior Brett McCleave (Lake Forest) continued his strong play, scoring 10 goals at the SoCal Tournament. McCleave leads the squad with 34 goals scored and has had 11 multiple-goal games this season. He is currently tied for No. 21 on the 49er career goals scored chart with 84.
Jay Gerardi: Junior Jay Gerardi (Long Beach) tallied seven goals at the SoCal Tournament, giving him 18 on the season. Gerardi, who is second on the team in goals scored, had two goals against Pacific, USC and UC San Diego. Gerardi entered the season on the heels of a strong sophomore year where he tallied 34 goals.
Thomas Onyshko: Senior goalie Thomas Onyshko (Simi Valley) keeps inching closer to the No. 1 spot in career saves. With 28 saves last weekend, Onyshko had 78 saves this year and 644 in his 49er career. He needs just 81 more saves to become the school record-holder, passing Brian Flint (724 saves). Last season Onyshko recorded 233 saves, a mark which ranks No. 7 all-time on the 49er single season chart.
Brad Scoles: Senior Brad Scoles (Ashland, OR) has played in every game in his three-plus years at Long Beach State, 104 appearances in the pool. He has been in the starting lineup in 88 of those contests. Scoles has begun the season in fine fashion as he is third on the team with 16 goals scored. At the Navy Open he recorded seven goals in the four victories.
