49ers Improve To 8-0 With Victories
REDLANDS, CA-- The No. 6-ranked Long Beach State men's water polo team keeps rolling along, picking up two victories on Sunday at the Inland Empire Classic to improve to 8-0 on the season. In the opener, the 49ers defeated Redlands, 12-6. In the afternoon The Beach defeated Whittier College, 15-10. In the win over Redlands, Jay Gerardi scored three goals to lead the 49ers. Long Beach jumped to a 3-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. That lead grew to 6-1 at the half and 10-3 after three quarters. Erik Geoffroy added two goals for the 49ers and seven others tallied one goal apiece. Goalie Thomas Onyshko recorded eight goalie saves. In the afternoon the 49ers defeated Whittier College 15-10. Ten different players scored, led by Brett McCleave's three goals. Gerardi, Reid Tomassi and Geoffroy each added two goals. Onyshko recorded six saves and freshman Derek Weibe-Bailey played the fourth quarter, registering one save. The 49ers have scored double digits in goals in all eight of its games this year and are averaging an impressive 13.75 goals per game. Defensively the 49ers allowed just 22 goals in the four games this weekend and are allowing an average of just 5.88 goals per game overall. Long Beach will be in action next weekend when they face off against most of their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) opponents at the annual SoCal Tournament. The tournament is hosted by UC Irvine this year.
