49ers Win Two At Inland Empire Classic
LaVERNE, CA-- Both the offense and defense were performing on all cylinders today as the No.6-ranked ranked 49ers (6-0) won two games at the Inland Empire Classic at LaVerne. In its opener the 49ers defeated Occidental 17-2, and then The Beach came back to beat Cal Lutheran 15-4. Long Beach State, improving to 6-0 on the season, will continue play on Sunday when they play Redlands (9 am) and Whittier College (12:45 pm). The 49ers jumped to a 6-1 lead at the half in its opener, and that proved to be all the 49ers would need. Goalies Thomas Onyshko (3 saves) and Derek Weibe-Bailey (5 saves) each allowed just one goal as each played one full half in the cage. Offensively, senior Satoshi Sakata had a career-high four goals and his former Long Beach City College teammate Stefan Ludecke scored three times to led The Beach. Brett McCleave, the reigning MPSF Mikasa Player of the Week, tallied two goals, as did Erik Geoffroy, Riley Brady and Jason Cloud. Against Cal Lutheran, 11 different players scored in the 15-4 victory. Brad Scoles led the way with three goals, while Geoffroy and McCleave added two each. Once again, Onyshko played the first half in goal and freshman Weibe-Bailey played the second. Both recorded two saves on the day. Leadiing just 5-4 at the half, the 49ers out-scored CLU 10-0 in the second half. Long Beach came into the tournament averaging 12.75 goals per game and now have hit double digits in goals in all six outings this season. The 17 goals scored today against Occidental is a season-high. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
