49ers Take On Washington In NCAA's LBSU and Huskies To Meet On May 13 At UCLA May 4, 2005
LONG BEACH, CA-- The No. 59-ranked Long Beach State (15-10) women's tennis team begins play in the 2005 NCAA Championships on Friday, May 13 when they take on No. 25-ranked University of Washington (14-8) at 10 am at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the campus of UCLA. The 49ers are the No. 3 seed in the bracket and the Huskies are the No. 2 seed. Number one seed UCLA (15-5/No. 12), and the No. 10 seed overall in the bracket, will play No. 4 seed Illinois State (18-7) at 1 pm. Friday's winners will meet in the second round on Saturday at 3 pm.
This will be the 49ers third NCAA Tournament as they participated in 2002 and 2004. In 2002 the 49ers fell to Pepperdine 4-1 at Stanford, and last year at UCLA the 49ers fell to the Bruins 4-0.
The 49ers played seven matches this year against teams that received bids to the 2005 NCAA Championships. This years opponents who made the field are Fresno State (L, 4-3), Notre Dame (L, 5-2), Oregon (W, 4-3), Pepperdine (L, 5-2), Sacramento State (L, 7-0), San Diego State (L, 5-2) and USC (L, 7-0).
The 16 seeds for the 2005 NCAA Championships are: 1-Stanford, 2-Florida, 3-Kentucky, 4-Vanderbilt, 5-Northwestern, 6-Georgia Tech, 7-USC, 8-Georgia, 9-Miami, FL, 10-UCLA, 11-Texas, 12-Clemson, 13-North Carolina, 14-Tulane, 15-BYU, 16-Tennessee.
